Traveling around Tyria can seem like a daunting task to a new player. It seems to take forever to get anywhere and the map is HUGE! But have no fear, it's not so bad as it seems! In fact traveling around Tyria can be quick and cheap.
The Waypoint System:
As you've no doubt discovered by now Guild Wars 2 zones have waypoints all over them. These serve not only as a system of travel but also as a way of saving your progress, as you can get back to the last area you discovered a waypoint in just by going to your map and traveling to it.
There is a catch to the waypoint system though. It costs money to travel to a waypoint. The further away from the waypoint in question you are the more it will cost to travel there. In the same respect, the higher your characters level the more it will cost to travel. This can rack up to a LOT of money over time.
The solution to getting around this cash sink is provided by means of sPvP and World vs World. By clicking on the sPvP icon or the WvW icon at the top of the screen you can go to either the Heart of the Mists or to a World vs World map.
The Asura Gates:
Very near where it puts you in either of these areas is an Asura Gate with a pink portal to Lions Arch, the capitol city of Tyria. In Lions arch is a waypoint to an area called Gate Hub Plaza. Gate Hub Plaza is a collection of portals to all of the major cities in Tyria.
From each of the major cities in Tyria there are portals to each of the corresponding starting zones and, in the case of Divinity's Reach, the Black Citadel, and Hoelbrak portals to higher level zones as well. (Lions arch also has two portals and a boat to take you to other zones.)
Waypoints in Major Cities:
Using waypoints in major cities is free, thus you can go from the gate you come out of in a major city straight to the gate that takes you into one of those zones without paying a single copper.
Obviously it's not possible to get to every zone like this, but this will get you to all but the 3 zones in Orr and 8 other zones. Traveling to 20 out 31 zones for free is not a bad ratio!
The Final Step:
Once you're in a zone or a zone next to one you can't port to for free, then go ahead and waypoint as close as you can to where you want to go. It will be a fraction of the cost that it would have had you not taken the portals.
If you have a slow computer and loading screens between zones take a long time this might not be the most time efficient way for you to travel, but it will still save you a lot of money in the long run.
Good luck and speedy travels!
